第5話：血の覚悟

The morning mist clung to the trees as Leon stood in the clearing behind Kai’s cabin, holding a wooden training sword.

Kai stood across from him, arms crossed.

“Rule one,” he said. “Don’t die.”

Leon frowned. “That’s it?”

Kai nodded. “Everything else comes after that.”

He stepped forward, tossing a second sword to Leon. “Now, try to hit me.”

Leon charged, swinging wildly.

Kai didn’t even flinch. With one smooth motion, he sidestepped and swept Leon’s legs out from under him.

Leon hit the ground hard, breath knocked from his lungs.

“Again,” Kai said.

Over and over, Leon attacked—and fell.

His hands blistered. His legs ached. His pride shattered. But he kept getting up.

Finally, as the sun dipped below the trees, he stood, shaking but upright.

Kai approached, not unkindly.

“You’ve got fire in you. That’s good. But fire without control? That’ll burn you up.”

Leon nodded slowly, chest rising and falling with effort.

“Then teach me control,” he said. “Even if it kills me.”

Kai looked at him for a long moment… and then smiled, just barely.

“Good. Then we start for real tomorrow.”

カイは頷いた。
「それ以外は全部、そのあとだ。」
彼はゆっくりと前に出て、もう一本の木剣をレオンに投げ渡す。
「さあ、俺を叩いてみろ。」
レオンは叫びながら突進し、勢いよく剣を振りかぶった。
だがカイは一歩も動じない。
すっと身を横にかわし、次の瞬間、レオンの足を払った。
レオンは地面に叩きつけられ、肺から空気が抜けた。
「もう一度だ。」
何度も、何度も、レオンは挑んだ。
そして、何度も地面に倒れた。
手のひらには水ぶくれができ、足は悲鳴を上げ、プライドは砕かれた。
だが、それでも彼は立ち上がった。
夕陽が木々の向こうに沈む頃、レオンはよろよろと、だが確かに立っていた。
カイが近づいてくる。
その表情には、わずかに優しさがにじんでいた。
「……火は、お前の中にある。」
「だが、制御されていない炎は、自分自身を焼き尽くす。」
レオンは、肩で息をしながら、静かに頷いた。
「なら、その制御を教えてくれ。たとえ死ぬとしても。」
カイはしばらく無言で彼を見つめ、
ほんのわずかに——だが確かに、笑った。
「よし。なら、明日からが本番だ。」
