第4話：剣を継ぐ者

The next morning, Leon and Thoren walked through the edge of the mountain forest. The old man’s steps were slow, but steady.

 

“There’s someone you need to meet,” Thoren said. “If you’re going to survive, you’ll need more than fire.”

 

They arrived at a worn-down cabin nestled between tall pines. Smoke rose gently from the chimney.

 

Thoren knocked once, firmly.

 

The door opened a crack. A man with short, dark hair and cold grey eyes looked out.

 

“…You brought him.”

 

“Yes,” Thoren said. “This is Leon. The flame has returned.”

 

The man opened the door fully, stepping aside.

 

“Come in.”

 

Leon entered, cautious. The man was younger than Thoren, but there was something old about his gaze.

 

“I’m Kai Lagner,” he said. “Used to be a knight. Not anymore.”

 

Kai sat by the hearth, sharpening a long sword.

 

Thoren turned to Leon. “Kai will teach you how to fight.”

 

Leon raised an eyebrow. “Why would you help me?”

 

Kai’s blade stopped mid-motion.

 

“…Because I once swore to protect this kingdom. And I failed.”

 

He looked up, eyes sharp as steel.

 

“But you might succeed. If you’re willing to bleed for it.”

彼らがたどり着いたのは、古びた山小屋だった。
煙突からはかすかに煙が立ち上っている。
トーレンが一度だけ、強く扉をノックする。
やがて扉が少しだけ開き、中から短く整えられた黒髪と、鋭い灰色の瞳を持つ男が顔をのぞかせた。
「……連れてきたか。」
「ああ。」トーレンは頷いた。
「この少年が、レオン。“炎”は戻ってきた。」
男は無言で扉を大きく開け、中に招き入れた。
「入れ。」
レオンは警戒しながらも中へ足を踏み入れる。
男はトーレンより若いが、その目には年老いた兵士のような深い疲れと覚悟が宿っていた。
「カイ・ラグナー。元騎士だ。今はただの剣士だがな。」
彼は暖炉の前に座り、長剣を静かに研いでいた。
トーレンはレオンに向き直る。
「カイが、お前に“戦い方”を教えてくれる。」
レオンは眉をひそめる。
「……なんで俺なんかを助けるんだ？」
カイの手が止まった。
「……俺はかつて、この国を守ると誓った。」
「だが、守れなかった。」
ゆっくりと顔を上げると、鋭い瞳がレオンを射抜く。
「だからこそ……今度こそ、お前には勝ってほしい。」
「そのためなら、血を流す覚悟があるか？」
